Memorial Day weekend brings a music festival that first began in 2011. Neon Desert is bringing back past attendees along with new ones because of its growing popularity.

“I’ve heard about it,” Junior Laiza Fogg said. “But I just never thought of going.”

Fogg said it was because of performers such as Cypress Hill  and J-Cole that drew her to this years event. Cypress Hill was one of the main performers that drew other students.

“I’m hoping he plays ‘Hits From The Bong,’” junior Mark Calderon said.

Calderon bought his tickets as soon as they went on sale. He attended the festival last year and it was one of the reasons he wanted to return to the festival.

“It was pretty crazy,” Calderon said. “It was a great memory and it was a really great experience.”

He bought his tickets as soon as possible to avoid paying a higher price if he waited longer. Other performers that Calderon is looking forward to include Flume, Kaskade, and Passion Pit.

“From Kaskade, I’m expecting to hear ‘A Little More,’” Calderon said. “From Flume I want to hear his remix of Sam Smith. I was hoping on seeing Odesza this year but I’m still happy with the lineup.”

The festival, an event by Splendid Sun Productions, has some students attending that are unfamiliar with some of the artists but are open to going.

“There’s a lot of weird rock/indie music that I’ve never heard of,” junior Monique Moncayo said. “I would have liked more rappers but there are not specific people I would have brought.”

This will be Moncayo’s first time attending the festival. Earl Sweatshirt and PartyNextDoor were among the performers that got her attention to attend this year.

“I’m mainly excited to get experience,” Moncayo said. “Just to hear a bunch of different music. I think it’s great that they bring all these artists together.”
